How to Sharpen Your Drill Bits with a Drill Bit Sharpener
Preventing drill bit breakage doesn’t have to be difficult, and it certainly doesn’t have to cost you any money. You don’t even need to have an expensive drill bit sharpener—you can sharpen your drill bits by hand with a drill bit sharpener! Drill bit sharpeners are also often called drill bits flatteners, which makes sense as this tool can be used to flatten the sides of drill bits as well as to sharpen them when they’re dull or broken.
What is the drill bit sharpener?
A drill bit sharpener is also called a
drill bit shrinker stretcher. This machine is used to sharpen and or
enlarge/expand (depending on how it's used) an existing hole in wood, metal or
plastic. This tool works much like an electric pencil sharpener except instead
of sharpening lead, it sharpens drill bits by evenly grinding away layers. The
process begins by inserting either a new pre-made segment into the tool’s
throat chute or by manually placing drill bit shavings from another angle
grinder into its grinding cup. The throat chute and grinding cup are two
separate pieces that screw together to create one piece when joined. The small
chute on top allows you to insert your new segment which will be placed over
your current blade.
Types of Drill Bit Sharpeners
There are many ways you can use your drill
bit sharpener. No matter what type of machine you buy, it will probably have
instructions on how to set it up for each task. Shrinker stretchers
tend to be mounted into a table or bench and often accept several different
sized drill bits. These are great options if you don’t plan on doing any major
drilling jobs, or if you want something that is easy to store away after each
use. Grinder sharpeners provide better results than shrinker/stretcher models,
but they also make much more noise and are usually limited by their size—they
can usually only hold one drill bit at a time.
How to Use it
Drill bit sharpeners, also known as drill
bit shrinkers and stretchers, will help your drill bits stay sharp for longer.
Drills are great tools that do an amazing job of drilling holes in concrete
walls, but they can dull quickly. If you've ever drilled into hard materials
like concrete or brick, you know what it's like to get frustrated by dull bits
that keep snapping in half while they’re cutting through a wall. The solution
is simple: sharpen them up! At any hardware store or home improvement center,
you can find inexpensive and easy-to-use drill bit sharpeners that will have
your drill bits back in shape in no time.
Manual vs Electric Version
You’ll want to choose between using a
manual drill bit sharpener or an electric drill bit sharpener. The manual
version is smaller and cheaper, but is not always as effective. The electric
model uses motorized sharpening wheels and has two sharpening settings: coarse
and fine. If you sharpen drill bits frequently, an electric model is probably
best because it will be faster; however, if you only have occasion to sharpen
drill bits every once in awhile, then opt for a manual model as it will do just
fine for your occasional needs. The important thing when purchasing either of
these models is choosing one that allows you to easily insert your drill bit in
order to sharpen it correctly.
